Local Bookshops

Waterstones

39-41 Notting Hill Gate, Kensington, London W11 3JQ, UK – 020 7229 9444

Aren't book shops awful? Just awful. They're a little bit smug, they're a little bit run down, they smell a bit like libraries and are overrun by couples browsing travel books and Ordinance Survey maps for their cycling holiday in Provence* next August. Luckily, Waterstones, this particular Waterstones, isn't really a bookshop. It's a toy, board game and wrapping paper shop that has a few books sprinkled around upstairs (for the purists). I don't blame them - toys are fun, books are awful, and wrapping paper is useful (for wrapping up those toys), but sadly, for the rest of us, it means the store is often full of children. Small children. Sticky children. (Why are there so many children everywhere?) The good news is that there are so few books in store that there's no risk of them developing any big ideas. Notting Hill Waterstones is ok, but I'd stick to Amazon. No children, lots of books, and the guy brings them to your flat for you! You don't even need to wear pants!!** *(I hear Bourgogne is also quite nice this time of year) **(I think the store frowns on browsing without trousers...probably something to do with with all those kids around)

Not a very spacious shop but nice as I love books. Shop Assistants leaves one to browse books and magazines in peace.

Waterstones

The staff in the Children’s section are friendly, helpful and excellent for recommendations for all ages and convey a real enthusiasm for reading. I have three children and we always end up buying more books than we planned but some of the personal reviews from staff have been out of this world.

Very well laid out store with extremely helpful staff. I was asked if I needed assistance which is unfortunately too rate and was a nice surprise. The assistance was prompt and professional but they did not have the book I was looking for and I was not asked if I wanted them to order it for me or told what other stores have it in stock. I really wish they had done that. Nevertheless I was impressed with the store.

The European Bookshop

123 Gloucester Rd, Kensington, London SW7 4TE, UK – 020 7734 5259

Great stock, reasonable pricing, but they have a "no refund" policy unless book is faulty or they have made a mistake. I purchased a grammar/exercise book in error, and went to return it. They would not give me a refund; issued a voucher instead. Not a fan of this policy.

Excellent place to get books and study materials in any European language. It's a rather small shop. So, they cannot have everything in stock, but it usually only takes a day to get what you are looking for, if it's not in store already. My advice, just call them two to three days ahead, then you will never be disappointed!
